But don't take our word for it, hear from some of our colleagues about their experiences of working at EMSOU and CTPEM, below...
“My team has been nothing but helpful, supportive and respectful; I have felt welcomed from day one at EMSOU. Colleagues show extreme patience, kindness, support and respect. I owe them a lot as they really make it feel like we are a team. Their knowledge, competence, commitment and determination to deliver a good job time after time is something which makes coming to work every day a complete privilege.
“I love how quick we are here to celebrate our own and each other’s successes, as well as support one another with the situations which arise when dealing with such high-risk criminality. It’s truly refreshing. Senior leaders seem genuinely interested in the work we do, and it feels that people are excited and appreciative at every level when a job goes well and, likewise, are supportive in those more challenging times.
“I want to encourage people to consider a career path in this area. The words I will always include when talking about EMSOU are ones such as ‘welcoming’, ‘supportive’, ‘enthusiastic’ and ‘professional’ – because that’s what we are.”
- Detective Inspector, Serious Organised Crime
“Counter Terrorism was an area of policing that had a certain amount of allure and intrigue for me.
“It’s a role that allows you to work with stakeholders both in the region and nationally, and a career that allows you to see the bigger picture and assist in reducing the threat to the UK.
“The best part of the role for me is working with intelligence. When this goes on to result in an arrest of a suspect or successful conviction at court, you really feel like you’ve helped make our region and country that bit safer.
“Working in Counter Terrorism Policing East Midlands is great. As the teams are small, there is a lot of collaborative working across teams to support each other. You get a lot of insight working like this, and there are opportunities to work in a number of areas.
“It's definitely not a 9-5 role working in an office – we are sometimes required to work antisocial hours but your office view can be the airport or seaport, which makes for an interesting scene!”
- Police Officer, Counter Terrorism Policing
“As a team, we look at the who, what, where, when, why’s and the how’s. Together, we’re right in the thick of an investigation, performing important groundwork to support the Senior Investigating Officer and Investigative Team, inform the direction of enquiries and, ultimately, contribute to getting offenders locked up.
“While some roles can be perfect for retired police officers, they are also suitable for enquiring minds, and those who may wish they had joined law enforcement as a police officer. A level head is also vital in what can be high-pressured, fast-paced work.
“I’ve found that while sitting in national meetings, here at EMSOU we are more often than not ahead of the game. It’s an exciting and inspiring place to be; not only that but the dedication, skill and commitment of the teams we have here are second to none and I am proud to work with them.”
- Manager in Serious Organised Crime, Police Staff
"My journey began in the Military in 2008, where I first discovered my passion for Digital Forensics in 2012 – a field I’ve been dedicated to ever since. I initially joined EMSOU in December 2018, left in August 2021, but found my way back in December 2023.
"Leaving policing for the first time was a significant and emotional decision for me. I wanted to challenge myself and explore new opportunities to see if there was something else that might ignite my passion. However, this experience reaffirmed my commitment to law enforcement. It became clear that there is no greater fulfilment for me than contributing to public safety and making a real impact through policing.
"I’ve a few decades ahead of me in my working life and I am committed to continuing my work with EMSOU, a place that truly resonates with my values and passion. It’s an exceptional environment filled with like-minded professionals, and I am eager to contribute to our shared mission of keeping people safe and delivering outstanding service."
- Technology Lead, Police Staff
