Your support is vital in keeping the East Midlands safe during the festive period

Santa isn’t the only one who checks things twice. Our specially trained security advisers at Counter Terrorism Policing in the East Midlands (CTPEM) work all year round to maintain and improve safety at key sites across the region.

The experienced team works with those in the entertainment, food and retail sectors, sporting venues, transport hubs, with education, health and more in order to keep those places in which you work, visit, shop and socialise safe from terrorism.

During winter, as the nights draw in and the festive events ramp up, we want you to continue to stay alert to what is going on around you and report anything that doesn’t feel right.

New figures reveal that public reports about possible terrorist activity have surged since the conflict between Israel and Hamas escalated, and this includes an increase in the number of reports being particularly useful to investigators.

Whilst the terrorism threat level remains at ‘substantial’ – which means an attack is ‘likely’ – events in the Middle East and other parts of the world are a reminder of the continued need for people to be vigilant.

Superintendent Steve Riley, Head of CTPEM, said: “The coming weeks are filled with brilliant events and activities across our region, where people will be coming together to enjoy the festive season. Sadly, however, we have seen before that terrorists can view these as attractive targets.

“We hope that the work we do, day and night with our partners, to monitor the threat picture and protect our public spaces, not only reduces this chance, but also helps you feel confident to be able to enjoy this special time of year.

“Critical to our work is the support we receive from the public. As the recent increase in reports shows, there is a real willingness from our communities to tell us about their concerns.

“To those who have contacted us, thank you. Your information can have a huge impact on what we do.

“Whilst we are working incredibly hard to make sure you can enjoy this time of year safely – our message is simple, stay alert and trust your instincts.

“Whether you’re a business, an event organiser, a local authority or simply heading out with family and friends, if you see something that doesn’t feel right, please report it.

“You won’t be wasting our time and you could save lives.”

Communities defeat terrorism. When you’re out and about this winter, make sure you stay alert to the following:

  • Anyone filming exits, entrances or security cameras.

  • Unattended bags.

  • Anything you hear or see, which doesn’t feel right.

Trust your instincts. Tell a member of staff, security or police. Report online at gov.uk/ACT or call police to talk through your concerns, in confidence, on 0800 789 321.

In an emergency, always call 999.
